UNDEFEATED Serendib secured the league title with a winning draw against Selsey.

An opening partnership of 130 between skipper Azam Riyard (68) and Chameera Dondeenu (58) built the foundations for Serendib.

Silme Ikram also hit 70 as his side made 243 all out from just 44.1 overs.

In reply Nazoomi Azhar took 6-28 but a fine 70 from Tim Fewster helped Selsey hold on for a losing draw as they were 201-9 at stumps.

After the game Riyard expressed his delight at the promotion and said he was vey proud of his players.

He said: "We are very happy with the cricket we have played this year and I think in the end we were quite convincing champions. This performance showed what we are all about. They put us in tricky conditions and managed to put on 130 for our first wicket.

"It was a pity we couldn't quite get the last wicket but they batted well and we are happy with the way we played."

Serendib on song hitting right notes

LET'S CELEBRATE: Serendib claim another wicket

LET'S CELEBRATE: Serendib claim another wicket

AN unbeaten century from Samson Burke was enough for Serendib to stroll to a comfortable five wicket victory at home.

The visitors won the toss and opted to take first use of a decent looking batting track.

But all the Serendib bowlers were on song and they slowly chipped away at the Horsham line-up.

Fazlan Nizamdeen struck at key times to record excellent figures of 3-35, and he was supported well by Malhar Buharideen (2-28) and Ali Khan (2-22).

Trinity's total of 171 always looked to be too small and so it proved, although only thanks to the brilliance of Burke.

Serendib made a horrible start to their chase as they fell to 13-2 and then 51-5. At this stage victory still seemed a long way off.

But Burke found some support from Segufared Rishafi and slowly but surely the partnership began to blossom.

The pair put on over 120 for the sixth wicket, with Rishafi playing the anchor role finishing on 30 not out. Burke, meanwhile, thrashed the ball to all parts to close on 102 not out, guiding his side to a crucial victory in the process.

AZAM Riyard says someone could get seriously hurt unless Crawley Borugh Council sorts out it's pitches.

The Serendib skipper saw 20 wickets fall for just 254 runs on Saturday and, despite his team securing yet another comfortable victory, Riyard slammed the quality of the wickets being produced.

He said: "The wickets on Saturday were really quite dangerous. The ball was popping up off a length and it was bouncing like a tennis ball.

"I got hit on the head three times and unless something is done then I'm really worried that someone will get really badly hurt. I have complained to the council but nothing has been done.

"They are quite happy to take your money when you hire the pitches but they just don't care about the quality of the wickets.

"We are trying to build a community club up here but I'm worried about letting the youngsters play in these conditions as it could put you off the sport for life."

However, a councils spokesperson refuted the suggestion that not enough was being done to prepare good wickets, insisting the vast majority of clubs were very happy with its service.

He said "Due to the lengthy dry spell, wickets become drier and break up in places.

"This is happening up and down the country. Groundsmen do their very best to repair any damage caused by dry weather as well as heavy use.

"The umpire will always have the final say regarding the suitability of a wicket for play.

"There are 10 wickets at Tilgate but only the middle five have been used this season. The cricket square will be renovated this autumn."

As far as the game itself, Serendib battled their way up to 168 thanks largely to a 48 run partnership between Zaheerul Mansoor (41) and Silme Ikram (39).

In reply, West Blachington never looked like getting close to the total after Anas Mohammed Zain-ul-Ameer blew the top order away claiming 3-16. Menon Ponnambalam, Nazoomi Azhar, captian Riyard and Wazoomi Wahid claimed the rest.

Burke holds nerve

day, July 07, 2010, 08:00

A FINE innings from Samson Burke proved the difference for Serendib as they edged past Eastergate by 37 runs.

The batsman was the only player to pass a 50 as he made 61 in a low scoring game that allowed his side to scrape up to a defendable total.

In reply, Anas Mohamed Zail-ul-Ameer, Wazoomi Wahid and Ali Khan all took three wickets as Eastergate fell well short of their target,

Khan's trio was especially impressive as he ripped through the lower order in just 3.4 overs as Serendib stay top.

Serendib are singing

A SUPERB bowling display set Serendib on the way to a comprehensive victory over Selsey on Saturday.

After winning the toss, captain Azam Riyard put the visitors into bat, and it ultimately turned out to be a good decision, despite a steady start from the Selsey openers.

Riyard had to turn to his spinner Wazoomi Wahid as early as the 10th over, with things not going to plan, and that proved correct as he took 2-29 to remove both openers.

Malhar Buharideen came away with 2-30, dispatching with the next two batsmen as wickets fell at regular intervals. Selsey were eventually skittled out for just 127 in little over 41 overs, with Samson Burke (2-17), Ali Khan (1-13) and Riyard (1-8) claiming the lower order wickets.

As the clouds grew darker overhead, Riyard knew his side would have to be quick and he put big hitting middle order batsman Silme Ikram in with opener Segufared Rishafi and he plundered an impressive 46 before being bowled by Cripps.

Riyard then came to join Rishafi at the crease and they saw the hosts through to victory in just 17.1 overs.

Riyard said: "To get them out for 127 was a brilliant team effort. It was a pretty comprehensive win and a really good day for us."

The second team, meanwhile powered to a stunning 180-run win over their Selsey counterparts to stay top of Division Nine.

A Riswan half century got them to 257-9 before the bowlers, namely Siraj Majeed, who picked up sensational figures of 7-25, did the damage, restricting their opponents to just 77 all out.

Yes we Khan!

Wednesday, June 16, 2010, 08:00

ALI Khan took 3-36 as Serendib eased past the challenge of Ram.

The quick and his fellow strike bowler Anas Mohamed Zain-ul-Ameer (3-47) were the pick of the bowlers as they limited their hosts to just 192 having won the toss and chosen to field.

Fellow wicket takers were Samson Burke (2-54), Majeed Shiraj (1-15) and Chameera Dondeenu (1-12). In reply Segufared Rishafi top scored with 45 as Serendib cruised home.

Chameera Dondeenu top scored with 39 while there was also scores from Shakir Hameed, Silme Ikram and Samson Burke.

In reply the Insurance men never looked like chasing the total as they were blown away inside 34 overs.

Burke in runs again for Serendib

Wednesday, May 12, 2010, 08:00

SAMSON Burke continued his excellent start to the season as he hit 86 as Serendib posted an impressive 215-5 declared against Storrington.

The batsman was well supported by Zaheerul Mansoor (56no) and big hitting Silmy Ikram with quick (36no) after the top order had again failed against the new ball.

But his side were unable to push for the victory as rain meant the game had to be abandoned at tea.

The result came just days after the club had hosted the Sussex roadshow (pictured) in a bid to get more local children into cricket.

Nizamdeen the hero

AZAM Riyard says he is delighted with his sides start to the season as they blew away Eastergate for just 58.

The Serendib skipper had seen his side in trouble at 4-2, but a 160 run partnership between Samson Burke (79) and Fazlan Nizamdeen (87) ensured the Crawley side would drag the score past 200.

And in reply Eastergate never looked like making the total as Serendib dominated from the first over.

Anas Mohamed Zain-ul-Ameer (1-20) and Malhar Buharideen (2-14) made early inroads with the new ball before Nizamdeen (4-12) and Ali Khan (3-11) blew away the moddle order.

Bowler Nizamdeen was especially dangerous, much to the delight of skipper Riyard.

He said: "Fazlan was outstanding. They just couldn't play him and the wickets kept falling at regular intervals.

"I'm delighted with the overall result as we lost to them twice last season so this is a great result and the perfect start to the season."

Riyard said the partnership between Nizamdeen and Burke made the difference, insisting their knocks were especially impressive considering the conditions.

"The ball was seaming around all over the place and it was tough to play early on.

"But they stabilised us and went on to built a total that was very challenging in those conditions. It is a shame they didn't stay there to finish the innings and get the hundreds they deserved.

"SERENDIB Cricket Club will be swimming in Shark infested water when they host the Sussex Cricket Roadshow next Tuesday.

The event will see a Sussex County Cricket Club star at Tilgate Playing Fields, Gainsborough Road, on May 4 at 6pm to help Serendib run training drills for local youngsters.

Captain Azam Riyard said his club were delighted to be involved with the project as they had only established a colts section this winter.

He said: "Having Sussex help us gives us more and more exposure in the local community and will hopefully inspire local children to come down and become involved with the club.

"We are running teams this year from U11 to U16 and there is still plenty of opportunity for youngsters to come down and join us."

Serendib themselves are preparing for their first game of the West Sussex Invitation Cricket League division two 1st  XI season this weekend, and Riyard is hopeful the team can compete.

He said: "We want to get into the top two this year which I think is possible as we learnt a lot about the league last year.

"We have some good young players coming through and we want them to play a bigger role."
